PRESS RELEASE
The Ungava Peninsula Caribou Aboriginal Roundtable (UPCART) is pleased to report that their sixth meeting held at Indian House Lake on the George River September 7th, 8th and 9th, 2016 was a success.
The UPCART significantly advanced its draft Management Strategy and is committed to adopting the Management Strategy by the end of the fall. The Management Strategy is intended to set the foundation for the management of the George River and Leaf River caribou herds. All Members expressed the importance of managing the Ungava herds for this generation and the next.
The UPCART recognizes the continued declined and the critical status of the George River Caribou Herd and is considering all options to provide for food security while ensuring that the cultural and spiritual relationships with caribou are preserved and respected.
UPCART would like to congratulate Mr. Mark Nui of the Innu Nation as the new Co-Chair replacing interim co-chair Minister Darryl Shiwak of the Nunatsiavut Government. Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and excellent moderation skills to the chairmanship. He will be sharing his duties with current co-chair Adamie Delisle Alaku executive vice president of Makivvik.
