IMPORTANT COMMUNICATION
In October 2020, I was mandated to collaborate in the implementation of a first Inuit Nation category for the First Peoples Medal of the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. The purpose of this medal, and its ceremony, is to recognize the exceptional contribution of members of the Inuit Nation to areas such as education, culture and tradition, arts, and community service. This special recognition is a first for Nunavik Inuit and the Lieutenant Governor of Québec, the Honourable Mr. Michel Doyon.
In order to recommend nominees for this distinction, if you wish, you can inform Inuit in your community that a nomination period is open for special people to be brought forward for consideration. The nomination period is presently open for a one (1) month period until February 15th, 2021. You are now encouraged to consider someone in your community, or in Nunavik, who could be nominated for this award. On this first round of nominations, Mr. Doyon would like to select three (3) recipients for 2020 and also select three recipients for 2021 at the same time. Please note that persons presently active in the political forum are not eligible; however, anyone who has been elected in the past and has since retired from politics is eligible to be nominated. It is also hoped that the three regions of Nunavik; Hudson’s Bay, Hudson Straight Ungava Bay will have representation.
The selection of this year’s nominees is especially important because the six (6) selected nominees will become the first Advisory Committee for the Inuit Nation medal for future years. The Advisory Committee will be responsible for reviewing future nominations, and make recommendations to the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec in his selection of medal recipients.
There is no shortage of people in Nunavik who have, and continue to, contribute greatly to the betterment of Inuit, and the prosperity of the region. We look forward to highlighting these citizens, and their important work.
It is important to remember that persons having a criminal record are not eligible to receive this award.
