Makivvik and the organizing committee are proud to announce the upcoming Ivakkak dog team race. This 15th race will hit this years’ trail on March 31st, 2016, departing from Quaqtaq, heading down the Ungava coast through the communities of Kangirsuk, Aupaluk, Tasiujaq and finishing in Kuujjuaq. Depending on weather, the race is expected to last about 13 days.
“We especially wish to thank those dog team owners of Nunavik who must not only train and prepare their dogs for this amazing race, but they also have to feed and look after them throughout the whole year. Dog team ownership has been an important aspect of the Inuit way of life passed down from our ancestors, and thanks to Ivakkak, it has been revitalized and celebrated,” says Andy Moorhouse, Makivvik Vice President, Economic Development.
Dog mushers and their teams are asked to register before March 11, 2016. It is expected that approximately 15 teams will be joining in this year’s race.
A mandatory veterinarian and an Ivakkak support crew will follow the teams for their safety and
