PRESS RELEASE
October 29, 2020 – Kuujjuaq, Nunavik – Important changes have been made to the Makivvik Executive Election procedures. During the recent Makivvik Board of Directors meeting from October 20-23, amendments to the Corporation’s by-laws were approved.
The date to submit a nomination form for an Executive Director election, the date to give public notice of the election and confirm the names of candidates, and the date of the election itself have all been changed. The changes were made to ensure a continuous campaigning period for all candidates, including any incumbent Makivvik Executive seeking re-election.
Another change is that an incumbent Executive seeking re-election shall have all responsibilities, rights and powers, except for title and salary, transferred to another Executive during the campaign period.
The changes were made to make the election process fair and equitable to everyone, and by ensuring that rules applicable during the campaign period are clear and well defined.
The changes come into effect immediately. Thus the deadline for the nominations for the upcoming Makivvik Presidential election will be on January 7, 2021 (previously December 1st, 2020). The new date for the Presidential election is February 4, 2021 (previously January 21, 2021).
