Kuujjuaq, Quebec February 26, 2013 – The Makivvik welcomes the appointment of Bernard Valcourt as the new Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development.
“ We can’t emphasize enough the importance of the ministry to the well being of Canada and its aboriginal people especially in this day and age,” says Makivvik President Jobie Tukkiapik.
Minister Valcourt indicated last week his plans to meet native leaders in the coming days.
Jobie Tukkiapik says he looks forward to a meeting to discuss Nunavik Issues such as the Housing Crisis in the region, the high cost of living and the impact of the “Nutrition North” Program.
The Makivvik is a not for profit corporation mandated to manage the heritage funds of the Inuit of Nunavik provided for in the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement. Makivvik ́s role includes the administration and investment of these funds, and the promotion of economic growth by providing assistance for the creation of Inuit operated businesses in Nunavik. Makivvik promotes the preservation of Inuit culture and language as well as the health, welfare, relief of poverty and education of Inuit in Nunavik communities.
