Corporation
is
proud
to
congratulate
Nunavik
artisit
Ulaayu
Pilurtuut
for
her
beautiful
design
that
is
featured
as
a
five
dollar
collector’s
coin.
She
is
the
first
Nunavik
Inuk
artist
to
be
selected
by
the
Royal
Mint
of
Canada.
Her art depicts an Inuk woman in an amautik hauling out a fish through the ice, an activity so common in the Canadian Arctic to feed families.
Makivvik President Jobie Tukkiapik says Ulaayu’s recognition makes all Nunavimmiut proud and encourages other artist to continue promoting Inuit culture through all forms of artistic expression.
Makivvik also recognizes and appreciates Mrs Nadine St‐Louis and Sacred Fire Production for their commendable work in promoting aboriginal, and more specifically Inuit art, artists and culture which makes people like Ulaayu Pilurtuut visible to Canada and indeed the world.
Ulaayu Pilurtuut is originally from Kangirsujuaq. She now makes her home in Kuujjuaq and works for the Kativik School Board. Ulaayu is a talented artist and is also a popular singer/songwriter of children songs in Inuktitut. She volunteers her time to teach Inuktitut music to youth in Nunavik .
