Makivvik is looking to name the Self-Determination process and is calling on our fellow Nunavik Inuit to help with this!
The current Self-Determination process is aimed at establishing a form of self-government based on Inuit values, traditions, and language. We are in discussions with the provincial and federal governments to negotiate a self-government agreement outlining the jurisdictional powers and authorities of the future Inuit government.
The proposed name should be sensitive to what has taken place in Nunavik during colonization, recognizing that divisions occurred between some families and communities because of extraordinary governmental pressures. The Self-Determination process is about Nunavik Inuit moving forward together to reclaim our land and our lives. We want it to reflect that we are on a journey as a people to a better place, united and stronger together. The process name should be unique to this process, not already used by other groups.
