Every year, Makivvik pays tribute to exceptional individuals within the Nunavik Inuit community through the prestigious Order of Nunavik. This award celebrates the achievements of Nunavik Inuit of all ages, serving as an inspiration for others to pursue their aspirations. In this year’s ceremony, two remarkable individuals were given this honour for their outstanding contributions and dedication.

The first recipient of the Order of Nunavik is Lolly Annahatak. From the Ungava Coast near Kangirsuk, Lolly’s journey has been an example of resilience and determination. Despite losing her sight at a young age, Lolly refused to be defined by it. She dedicated herself to her education, becoming the first Inuk to achieve a Certificate in Northern Social Work and graduating with distinction with a Bachelor of Social Work from McGill University.

Lolly’s impact goes beyond academic achievements, as she has become a beacon of hope and support within her community. As a devoted social worker, she has tirelessly advocated for those facing hardships, offering counselling services, championing social justice causes, and mentoring youth. Her energy and infectious positivity have touched the lives of countless individuals, embodying the resilience and vibrancy of Nunavik.

The second honoree, Lukasi Nappaaluk, traces his roots to a small community north of Kangirsujuaq. Raised amidst the beauty of nature, Lukasi developed a deep respect for his Inuit heritage from an early age. Recognizing the importance of preserving traditions for future generations, he dedicated his life to sharing the richness of Inuit culture through storytelling, language preservation initiatives, and cultural education programs.

Lukasi’s commitment to safeguarding Inuit heritage knows no bounds, as he collects oral histories and passes on traditional skills to the younger generation. Beyond his role as a cultural preservationist, Lukasi serves as a bridge between generations, fostering understanding and unity within his community. His contributions to Nunavik are immeasurable, serving as an example of the enduring strength and resilience of Inuit.

In honouring Lolly Annahatak and Lukasi Nappaaluk with the Order of Nunavik, Makivvik celebrates their remarkable achievements and the profound impact they have made on Nunavimmiut. Their dedication and passion serve as an inspiration for all, embodying the spirit of resilience and excellence that defines Inuit.
