A Pillar of Resilience and Recovery in Nunavik
Nestled within Nunavik’s vibrant landscape, the Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre stands as a sanctuary of resilience, healing, and renewed hope. Established in 1995 through the collaborative efforts of Makivvik and Jaani Aatami, former mayor of Kuujjuaq, this institution has become indispensable to the Inuit community.
Isuarsivik was born in response to the critical need for a recovery centre devoted to Nunavik’s unique cultural and social landscape. It remains one of the few inpatient recovery facilities in the region, serving beneficiaries of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA), including the Inuit of Nunavik and their families.
From its humble beginnings in a modest 1942 building with only three bedrooms, Isuarsivik has since undergone transformative growth. In 2016, the board’s Development Plan laid the groundwork for a new facility designed to expand capacity, enhance programs, and prioritize family and prenatal support, in parallel with the introduction of broader community-based services. January 2023 witnessed Isuarsivik’s move into the new building, strengthened by the construction of staff housing.
With Nunavik’s 14 communities and over 14,000 residents at its centre, Isuarsivik’s mission is resolute: to provide holistic, culturally attuned programs that foster Nunavimmiut’s inner resilience and well-being.
David Forrest, Board President, envisions Isuarsivik as a catalyst for destigmatizing addiction and promoting open, judgment-free support for those grappling with substance use.
Isuarsivik’s reach extends throughout Nunavik, with in-house and Continued Care services (Pre-care, Aftercare, Detention support, and Community Support). The 8-Week Collective Recovery Program advocates for trauma recovery and cultural reconnection, employing land-based healing practices fundamental to Inuit culture.
Despite the new facility’s capacity to serve more individuals, its substantial waiting list draws attention to the ongoing need for these vital services. The growth of Isuarsivik, from a 15-member team to an 80-strong workforce, mirrors the expansion of its support services and facilities, which now cater to significantly more individuals and families.
The centre’s cultural ethos, exemplified by its sewing room, art space, and communal areas, plays a pivotal role in nurturing guests’ connection to their heritage and supporting their recovery journey.
On September 20, 2023, Isuarsivik inaugurated its new facility, marking the culmination of years of collective efforts and planning and showcasing the new healing spaces and programs to funders, partners, and the media.
With an eye on the future, Isuarsivik is developing a Cultural Workshop to complement its therapeutic offerings and is gearing up for its 30th anniversary in 2025. The centre’s vision includes the implementation of sustained operational funding and initiatives like the Pingngupaa Challenge, all contributing to the enduring recovery and wellness of Nunavimmiut.
Pingngupaa Challenge 2024
In February 2024, Isuarsivik will host the 6th annual Pingngupaa Challenge, a cornerstone of its harm reduction initiative. Participants from all walks of life are invited to register and tailor their own goals—be it moderating daily alcohol or drug consumption, abstaining on chosen days, or pursuing sobriety for the entire 29 days of the month. To help this personal journey, Isuarsivik’s team will offer daily motivational counselling content to assist participants throughout the challenge. Participants are encouraged to secure sponsors to support their endeavours for the whole month. All donations will be channelled to the Isuarsivik Foundation, contributing to the betterment and recovery of Nunavik.
Each participant who raises over $28 is entered into the Annual Pingngupaa Challenge Draw for a chance to win various prizes provided by our generous donors who wish to celebrate the dedication and efforts of all those involved.
This year, the challenge unveils an exciting new facet: The Pingngupaa Challenge TOUR. Our dedicated team will embark on a month-long journey to visit each of the 14 communities across Nunavik, conducting counselling activities.
