In June and July of 2024, Makivvik’s Self-Determination team embarked on a transformative journey to each Nunavik community, reconnecting and engaging with Inuit across the region. This initiative, led by Chief Negotiator Anthony Ittoshat, Deputy Negotiator Tunu Napartuk, and Coordinator Victoria Gordon, set out to share the team’s progress and, most importantly, to give every voice a platform on the future of Inuit self-governance.
From the very beginning, the Self-Determination team felt the strength of community support, the warmth of welcomes, and the openness to conversation. The idea of Inuit governance is deeply rooted and resilient after more than five decades and still resonates powerfully across the region. Through each conversation, the legacy of Nunavik’s leaders, past and present, was recognized as a guiding force and highlighted the dedication that has laid the groundwork for this new chapter.

During the consultation tour, the communities’ message was one of support: Inuit of Nunavik desire a government that enables them to shape their own future in their own land, led by Inuit values and Inuit voices. Many individuals shared both their hopes and concerns, touching on topics such as taxes, funding, the structure of an Inuit Nunavik Government, the roles of Makivvik and the Landholding Corporations, child and family services, the protection of Inuit culture and language, and land management. These discussions reflected the community’s commitment to a self-determined government that aligns with their aspirations.
It is also important to acknowledge that not everyone was immediately open to the concept of self-government. Some voiced reservations about workforce readiness, citing experience and education gaps, and referenced challenges faced by other Indigenous governments. Concerns about potential tax increases and sustainable funding for an Inuit government were also raised. The team took note of these perspectives and recognizes that addressing these concerns will be critical to building a government that is both effective and broadly supported.
Throughout the tour, it became clear that engaging youth was a challenge in itself, as their participation needs to be increased through town hall meetings, local FM call-in shows, and individual discussions. Recognizing that Nunavik youth must have a voice in shaping their future, the team is committed to strengthening youth involvement. Contacts have already been made with youth organizations like Qarjuit Youth Council and Nunavik Youth House Association to explore meaningful ways to connect. The team is also considering an increased use of social media and other youth-friendly platforms to engage with the next generation to ensure that youth perspectives are represented in the journey toward self-governance.

Looking ahead, the Self-Determination team is committed to strengthening communication channels with Nunavik Inuit and regional organizations to maintain momentum. As consultations continue, this journey remains inclusive and forward focused, embracing every opportunity to build Nunavik’s future government with transparency and respect for all partners.
The establishment of a Nunavik Inuit government, elected by its beneficiaries and grounded in Inuit culture and values, will be an historic achievement that shapes the everyday lives and aspirations of all Nunavik residents. The voices of each stakeholder and every Inuk are essential to building a government that truly reflects the will and wisdom of Nunavik’s people.
Inuit have shown, time and again, our capability and commitment to govern in ways that respect our culture and enhance our quality of life. The experience and strength gained over the past 50 years empower us as we work toward a future where self-governance is realized, and Nunavik communities thrive under Inuit leadership.
