Some real-life Nunavik heroes were honoured at Makivvik’s recent AGM in Quaqtaq. Every year, individuals are recognized for their extraordinary acts of bravery, displaying remarkable courage and selflessness in the face of danger. This year’s recipients exemplify the highest ideals of courage, sacrificing their own safety to save the lives of others.
One such story of bravery involves Elijah Saunders and Qullik Angnatuk, who were awarded the Bravery Award for their joint effort in rescuing Emily Epoo Saunders. In May of 2020, Emily suffered extensive burns in a campfire incident. Without hesitation, Elijah and Qullik acted swiftly, extinguishing the flames, and transporting Emily to the hospital. Their quick intervention undoubtedly saved Emily’s life, demonstrating the power of quick thinking and decisive action in times of crisis.
Another remarkable tale of bravery comes from seven-year-old Tukirqi Uqittuq, who courageously shielded her younger sister, Julie-Anne Uqittuq, from an attempted mauling by a dog. Despite the danger she faced, Tukirqi bravely kept the aggressive dog at bay until help arrived. With the assistance of her mother, Vicky Uqittuq, and community member Etua Sakiagak, the girls were safely brought to shelter. Tukirqi’s selfless actions in protecting her sister while risking her own safety exemplify the courage and resilience of Nunavik’s youth.
Willia Ningiuk was also recognized for his heroic actions earlier this month when he saved his son, Isara Inukpuk, from drowning. While fishing near Uugarsiuvik, Isara fell into the open water, hidden by snow cover. Willia reacted quickly, navigating the ice to reach his son and pull him from the frigid waters, undoubtedly saving his life. Willia’s bravery and quick thinking under pressure highlight the importance of preparedness and courage in emergency situations.
Lastly, the late Sandy Clunas was honoured posthumously for his heroic sacrifice in September of 2023. During a fishing trip, Sandy rescued his foster son after their boat drifted away from the coast. Despite successfully pushing the boat back to safety, Sandy struggled with the current and tragically lost his life in the process. His selfless act ensured the safety of his foster child, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and compassion that will be remembered by all who knew him.
