Given Nunavik’s young and rapidly growing population, providing adequate housing remains a priority for Makivvik, the Kativik Regional Government (KRG), the Kativik Municipal Housing Bureau (KMHB), and both federal and provincial governments.
Makivvik’s Construction Division builds social housing units resulting from multi-year funding agreements Makivvik negotiates with federal and provincial governments. For example, we are now well into the fourth funding agreements with the Government of Canada and Quebec to build social housing units in all 14 communities in an effort to overcome a continuing housing shortage across the region:
- The current five-year agreement between Canada, Quebec, KMHB, KRG and Makivvik was signed in 2017 and provides approximately $125-million over a five-year period
The Construction Division is responsible for the implementation of the Nunavik Housing Program and its main objective is to ensure proper and quality construction is undertaken while maximizing employment opportunities for the Inuit of Nunavik; provide training, when necessary, and to promote the local Nunavik economy to the greatest extent possible.
Further negotiations for additional housing funding agreements continue with federal and provincial governments.
