February 25, 2020 – Kangirsuk, Nunavik – The annual Ivakkak husky dog race was stopped today approximately an hour after it started due to the unfortunate death of one of the participants. The race started in the Nunavik town of Kangirsuk at 10am. Seven teams had reached across the bay, when one of the teams initiated their emergency inReach device requesting assistance followed by a call to the community’s 1st responders. An emergency response crew was deployed shortly after receiving the signal. Medical attendants performed resuscitative measures but were unable to revive him. His body was brought back to Kangirsuk. Next of kin have been notified.
Makivvik is profoundly saddened by this tragedy, which took place during an event that brings joy to Inuit across Nunavik each year. We are not releasing the name of the deceased at this time or the cause of death. All the teams of racers are returning to Kangirsuk. A briefing will be held tonight with all race participants and crews. Makivvik will communicate more information when it is available.
